Highlights:
Itinerary:
For this glacier lagoon tour, you can expect a morning pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavík.
First Stop: Seljalandsfoss. This is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland and visitors can get up-close and personal. You’ll even get the chance to walk behind this magnificent waterfall.
Once the first stop is complete, we’ll drive along the Ring Road, visiting the Skógafoss waterfall and heading in the direction of Hekla volcano. This is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland today. It should come as no surprise that in the Middle Ages, this volcano was known as the “gateway to hell”.
But Hekla isn’t the only volcano that we’ll be able to spot from the Ring Road. The infamous Eyjafjallajökull will also be towering over us. You’ll probably remember its famous eruption of 2010, which severely disrupted and grounded air traffic all over Europe. Now you’ll get the chance to check it out yourself!
The next stop is Reynisfjara. This black sand beach is beautifully decorated by massive sea stacks and hexagonal basalt columns which are sure to impress. After our visit to the beach, we’ll head to the photogenic Vík í Myrdal. There, the sea rock formations, known as Reynisdrangar, are waiting for us to admire their beauty.
Continuing along the ever-changing South Coast, we’ll be able to admire green lava fields, barren deserts of black sand, impressive sea cliffs, and scenic glacial rivers. This will all happen while we are en route to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
Jökulsárlón is one of the most beautiful sights that Iceland has to offer. In this lagoon, there are icebergs of all sizes, shapes, and colors floating on top of the water as they slowly work their way from the glacier that birthed them to the Atlantic Ocean. During this journey, some of the icebergs end up washed up on the shore where they lay scattered across the sand like shining jewels. This is why the beach is known as Diamond Beach.
While at the lagoon, you’ll be given time to explore. There is an optional boat tour available from May to October, when the weather permits. This option tour is not included in the price of the tour. After we have finished at the lagoon, we’ll get back in the vehicle for the drive back to Reykjavik.
Meet your driver in the lobby of your hotel and set off on a riding tour through the south of Iceland and admire some incredible volcanic landscapes.
Soak up the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the red lava fields of Iceland on this horseback tour. Your tour will be between 5-7 kilometers depending on the experience of the riders, with this tour suitable for beginners and those with more experience too. After setting off, you will ride along a beautiful and smooth path along the Redhills. For groups of more experienced riders, you will ride by Rauðarvatn.
On both routes, you will enjoy natural riding paths and a wonderful setting for horseback riding where you will get to know these friendly Icelandic horses. Enjoy a total of 1.5-2 hours of horseback riding. You will be provided with rain clothing during your tour if required, and there will be complimentary tea and coffee on hand for your comfort. At the conclusion of your tour, you will be returned back to the stables or to your accommodation in Reykjavik.
What to bring:
Your adventure will begin in Reykjavík where your private guide will pick you up at your hotel. You will get on board a modified Superjeep equipped with free Wi-Fi. You will quickly leave the lights of the city behind to head out into the darkness of the vast Icelandic countryside in search of the magical Northern Lights.
As you will quest for the Aurora for hours, there can be many places that you could possibly see by night. You may visit the Golden Circle area, somewhere in South Iceland, the lava fields and volcanoes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, or even the western part of Iceland. Where you go depends entirely on the forecast and the weather.
To maximize your enjoyment, you will be able to go to locations that are off the beaten path which the tour buses and minivans cannot reach.
Your guide will tell you every fact about the science behind the Northern Lights as well as captivating stories and mythical folklore about Iceland and the Aurora Borealis. You will also be welcome to ask any questions you may have about this natural phenomenon.
During the cold night, a cup of hot chocolate will keep you warm.
Your guide will take a photo of you under the Northern Lights and that they will share it with you online the next day so that you can keep the memory alive. We will send you an email with a link to the photos so that you can download them.
After a few hours of Northern Lights hunting, your guide will drive you back to Reykjavik where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
Meet your guide in the lobby of your hotel and leave the city limits, as you drive through Hellisheiði, a lava plateau, while following Route 1. This will take you to the Golden Circle, the sightseeing route that has become a global phenomenon.
The first visit of the day is at a site that has great historic and geographic significance. Þingvellir National Park is the place where the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates join, forming a continental rift valley that is speckled with impressive cracks and fissures. This site was also the location of Althingi, the first parliament of Iceland.
While strolling along Almannagjá Gorge, marveling at the beautiful volcanic scenery around you, you’ll literally be in the middle of two worlds. In the settlement era, this valley was where the chieftains decided amongst themselves the laws that their people would follow and also settled the biggest family feuds that the Viking Age had to offer.
After leaving Thingvellir behind, your next destination is Haukadalur. This geothermal valley is the home of the geyser which all others of its kind are named after. The Great Geysir does not erupt as often now but its neighbor Strokkur is exceptionally active, shooting boiling water high into the sky every 10 minutes. The surrounding mud pools, hot vents, and fumaroles are sure to pique both your interest and your appetite.
You’ll stop for a snack before getting back in the vehicle to visit the jewel the Golden Circle route was named after.
Gullfoss, also known as the Golden Falls, is an impressive two-tiered waterfall. The power of the water falling over this cascade into the canyon below is truly astounding. The viewing platform is perfect for seeing this spectacle up close and personal, to get a true sense of its unharnessed strength.
If the weather permits, we’ll leave the beaten path and take our SuperJeeps into the rough. This off-road adventure will take us straight into the Highlands. Here we’ll visit the area around Langjökull, which in Icelandic means the “long glacier”. At 953 km2 (592 sq. mi.), this is the second-largest glacier in Iceland. The view from the vehicle of the wild terrain will delight you while the driver stops from time to time at fantastic sights.
Once we have returned to the road, we’ll visit either Faxi, a small, beautiful waterfall, or Kerið, a 3000-year-old crater lake located in the middle of a volcano. After that, our adventure will have ended and it’ll be time to return to Reykjavik.
